These Skuas wouldn't by any chance be those eight planes shot down from a group of fifteen launched from the HMS Ark Royal at around 02.00 o'clock, 13 June 1940, to attack the Juno-force at anchor in Trondheim..?

great news - skua

Post by mmoe on Tue 8 Apr 2008 - 17:04

The skua rescue operation in the trondheimsfjord is blessed by sunny weather and a calm sea today. A barge with a crane is now on site, but problems hooking the straps from the lifting rack under the wings are causing delays.

Operation continues in good spirits!

skua - straps around wings

Post by mmoe on Tue 8 Apr 2008 - 18:20

According to the lucky ones who can still be at the skua rescue-operation site (im at work) its now confirmed that the plane is "hooked" and the raising will start in a few minutes. Its estimated that apx. 2 hours is required the raise the plane to a position a few meters below the surface. Divers will then fasten additional straps before the plane is (hopefully) heaved safely onto the barge.

I've understood from the various links in the other threads that my inital assumption turned out to be correct. I also read that the crew survived. Could it be established who they were and whether this plane was the one to score the hit (which unfortunately for the British turned out to be a dud) aboard the Scharnhorst?
