Ship sunk in Ålesund 5th December 1944

Post  mxsytfc on Thu 30 Jul 2009 - 15:10

My father was the navigator and captain of Halifax 'V' of 512 Squadron Coastal Command. His RAF log book and some newspaper clippings I have says he sunk a 6,000 ton merchant vessel in Ålesund South anchorage in the early hours of 5th December 1944. I'm trying to find out some more details about the ship and the incident. Can anyone help?

thanks

Hi Mark,

On the 5th of December 1944 I find the following in 4 KSV KTB (Ålesund):

Local time
0148: A new bomb attack (2 bombs dropped) near D. "Ulanga" in south anchorage site in Ålesund.
0348-0359: Several aircraft dropped bombs at anchorage site in Ålesund. No damage.
0410: Bomb attack in Vartdalsfjord on D. "Ulanga" and M 421.

No record of damage resulting in sinking of ship.

There were a lot of RAF activites this day, e.g. strike wing attack in Ørstafjord.
