Operation Grouse/Swallow/Gunnerside re-enactment

Post  Bob Pearson on Wed 30 Dec 2009 - 20:51

The Royal Marines have announced that they will be taking part in a re-enactment of the famous and very successful SOE raid on the heavy water plant at Rjukan. The following is an extract taken from The Daily Telegraph - Nov 09:

The epic ski will be undertaken by some 10 officers and other ranks next March to raise funds for cancer charities and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund, which among other functions helps Marines wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq. It has struggled to raise funds recently.

A number of the officers leading the expedition have suffered the loss of loved ones from cancer. The most senior officer taking part, Colonel Jim Hutton, is marking the life of his son Jamie, also a Marine, who died in a training accident while preparing to deploy to Afghanistan.

Lt Col Gary Green, leader of the expedition, lost his wife Dionne to cancer in September. He is hoping a well-known personality will join the team for at least part of the route to boost the profile of the expedition.

The lucky celebrity will receive personal tuition from former SBS member Bernie Shrosbree, also a member of the expedition.

”We intend to cover 1,000 kilometres across very inhospitable terrain in 20 days, which is the equivalent of a marathon and a third per day,” said Lt Col Green, who is a veteran of the Falklands.

“We will also have to scale mountains which, if added to together, would represent an ascent of Everest. We hope some celebrity out there may consider taking on the challenge.”

The re-enactment of the Telemark raid will come in the last two hundred miles of the ski. The team will sleep in tents, huts and snow holes during the trek across the Hardangervidda plateau, which in winter resembles the polar ice-cap.

The coverage in the UK for this re-enactment will probably be a few seconds on the BBC news, so hopefully, regular contributors to the forum will post Norwegian media coverage, which will probably be more extensive.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone Et Godt Nytt År til alle
