263 Squadron, improvised runway central Norway. Apr 24.

263 Squadron land at Lake Lesjaskog April 24
equipped with eighteen Gloster Gladiator aircraft, believed to be suitably robust to operate in these conditions, were embarked on HMS Glorious.

Unfortunately the morning of the 25th brought worse problems. The bitter cold of the night froze the engines of the Gladiators.
A series of German bombing raids during the day destroyed or seriously damaged thirteen of the Gladiators.

The british pilots were adviced by norwegians to run their engines an move their planes quite often during the night. But no "bloody nrwegian" should tell the RAF how to act. They just asked for it.

Interesting. Norwegian squadrons placed 1st & 3rd in RAF.

Churchill favored an attack at Trondheim & if it were successful the British would have got the airfields. As it was they chose to go north & land at Tromso. Germans had complete air control. Hard lessons learned learned for the British in central Norway.

The story of this squadron is well covered in the Derry account. They had no battery acid for the starter trolleys and all sorts of other deficiencies. Reading between the lines of Derry, the peculiar British institution of muddling through and hoping for the best was not a good strategy. Sadly this is not an isolated incident of them failing to take Norwegian advice. Rolling Eyes
