Operation Sicily. What happenned to the Norwegians?

'Operation Sicily'

"which pushed the Norwegian garrison into the mountains."

During the operation, Scharnhorst destroyed a battery of two 76 mm (3.0 in) guns and shelled fuel tanks, coal mines, harbor facilities, and military installations.[42] Of particular importance was the weather station that was transmitting weather information to the Allies, which was used to schedule convoys to the Soviet Union.[43] The destroyers landed some 1,000 troops, which pushed the Norwegian garrison into the mountains.

Hi
if I remember correctly, the surviving Norwegians (I think around 10 were killed in battle with the Germans and about 70 or so captured) were rescued by a US cruiser after about 3 weeks or so, and a new garrison was quickly put in place.

Cool thanks. I'm sure there are 1001 stories like this we haven't heard. Love to read a Norwegians account of it.

yeah, there are some interesting stories from Svalbard/Spitzbergen. I believe the German weather station there (possibly at Hopen) was the last German military unit to surrender in 1945, some time in september I believe.

I think, but will check when I get back to civilisation, it was the USS Tuscaloosa (CA) that relieved the surviving Norwegians at Barentsburg in October.

Interestingly, I also seem to remember the Tirpitz firing her main guns at German troops in Longyearbyen some 5 hours after the landing, but perhaps someone can fill in more details on that.
