PoW camp in Berlevåg

Post  vle on Fri 26 Jul 2013 - 14:01

Hi

There was a PoW camp in Berlevåg during WWII. Is there anyone who could tell me where to find any information about this camp? My guess is that there could be something in german archieves, but which one? And would these hand over ie list over prisoners who have been located to this camp? Where was these prisoners sent to when they was evacuated from Berlevåg? When was the camp established and when was it evacuated? Where does these prisoners come from? Most of them was russian prisoners, but which camp does they come from to Berlevåg? Is there any site on internet to search on about this information?

I have searched after some information, but it is scarce wat is available. We at Narviksenteret have copies from internetpage in Russia of the Prisoner-Cards that is available on many of the dead Soviet pow. Also the transportlists tells us something. The first Soviet pow came on the 28th of July 1943 to Berlevåg. On that day 217 pow came. But more came on the 8th of August, unknown number. They left sometime before Oct.-Nov. 1944, sent South in Nordland. But I do not know where and when. They would have been repatriated together with the others in the summer of 1945. Maybe through Narvik to Soviet. But on the lists there is only names and seldom which camps they were in. There could be some more info in Heer-Archive or Organisation Todt-archive in National Archive, Oslo. But not personal info.
The camp was near Ole Strands small farm, near the road to the flak-battterie, according to the book of Geir Bergheim from 1994. The camp was called "Zweig-lager nr. 15".
Subcamp nr. 15. Five prisoners were killed on 11.12.1943 on what is said was a Escape-attempt, but probably was some prisoners going to houses asking for Food and did not coming back at the right time.

Do you have some additional information?

Best regards, Michael Stokke

Hello Michael

Thank you for your reply. Thats pretty much what is known here in Berlevåg.

During this summer festival there was a session about the camp on it's site. It's actual location is correct as stated, and it is near the german airfield as well. This airfield was started construction in 1943 and it is probably because of this airfield this PoW camp was established
