large collection of Royal Norwegian Navy ship photos

Post  Mark C. Jones on Fri 6 Jun 2014 - 2:27

There is a sizable collection of Norwegian naval ship photos available through the website www.digitaltmuseum.no (note the additional letter 't'). This appears to be the pooled digital holdings of several dozen museums in Norway. Much of the collection appears to be photos, but there are other items as well.

My initial searches within the database have turned up many hundreds of photos of Norwegian naval ships, mostly from World War II and the earlier years of the Cold War. For some of the better known Royal Norwegian Navy (RNoN) ships from World War II (torpedo boat Sleipner, 'U' class submarine Uredd, Hunt class escort destroyer Glaisdale), there are an estimated 50-100 photos of each ship. Some of the destroyers taken over from the British Royal Navy after the war are also commonly featured.

Most of the photos appear to be black and white. I do not know whether these photos are considered to be in the public domain or not. The website has an English-language version. When clicking on a link for any one photo, the record for that image includes the identification number and the museum which controls that photo. There are captions which range from the most general and obvious without a date, to names of individual naval personnel and the exact date the photo was taken.

Hi Mark,

Many thanks for flagging this one up - some great images from WW2. Will need to study this in some depth.

Regards,

Bob
